Why is gold extraction environmentally undesirable?

Cyanide is a poison. Having a large excess of a poison is undesirable because you then risk killing/contaminating a large area through seepage into the earth that results in plant and insect death, potential seepage into groundwater affect the wildlife and plantlife there, or release into the atmosphere affecting larger animals and humans.
